This article covers how to claim Bitcoin Gold for those who had Bitcoins when the hard fork took place back in October 2017.
What is Bitcoin Gold?
On October 24th 2017 a hard fork of the Bitcoin blockchain was created called Bitcoin Gold. Simply put, this variant of Bitcoin was created to be ASIC resistant in terms of the mining used.
The good news is that if you had any Bitcoins in your Bitcoin wallet as of block 491407 on October 24th 2017, you will have the exact same amount of Bitcoin Gold available to you.
How do I claim Bitcoin Gold?
It is important to note that if you store stored your Bitcoins on an online exchange at the time of the fork, you will need to check to see if your exchange supports Bitcoin Gold. Not all exchanges have support for Bitcoin Cash yet with some having plans to support in future and others planning to never support it at all.
If you hold your own Bitcoins personally on a wallet, perfect, you can follow the instructions below to claim Bitcoin Gold right away.
***Before doing anything, it is highly recommended to clear out any Bitcoins from your existing Bitcoin addresses before claiming the Bitcoin Gold from them. Please make sure you do this and do not follow any of the instructions before doing so.***
The instructions I am giving explain how to do this on an Android smartphone or an Android emulator. From my research, the app doesn’t exist on the App Store for iPhones.
The Nox Player is a great emulator – it’s the one I used when getting my Bitcoin Gold.
Once you are ready, install the “Coinomi Wallet” from the Google Play Store.
Open the Coinomi Wallet app and choose “Create new wallet”.
On the next page you will be given a recovery phrase. Make sure you write this down as you will need it for future reference. Hit “next”.
You will be prompted to enter your recovery phrase. Click on them in the correct order and hit “next” again.
Create a password for the wallet. Do not forget this password as you will need it later to send the Bitcoin Gold. Hit “next”.
You will be prompted on the next screen to choose the coins to use in your wallet. Select “Bitcoin Gold” and hit “finish”.
You should then be presented with a screen saying you have 0.00 BTG.
Click on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the screen and select “Sweep wallet”.
Enter your private key into the text box provided and hit “next”.
You will then be shown the balance of BTG on that address, if any.
“Hit confirm” and the Bitcoin Gold will be added to your wallet.
As Bitcoin Gold and the wallet software surrounding it is so new, I would personally recommend moving them over to an Exchange as soon as possible. I would also recommend not re-using any of the addresses/private keys ever again just to be extra safe.
Earlier in the year (August 2017), another fork called Bitcoin Cash was created. Check my article here on how to claim this too.
